CASE STUDY

Horbury Academy

Task: Design & Full Turnkey Installation

Client: Accord Multi-Academy Trust

Location: Horbury

This case study presents an educational male and female washroom installation project at Horbury Academy, a mixed Academy of students aged 11-16, situated on the outskirts of Wakefield. The school has been part of the Accord Multi-Academy Trust since 2016.

Objectives and design considerations

The primary objectives of this project were centred on the creation of a modern, professional, and student-centric washroom environment that aligns seamlessly with the school's unwavering commitment to the well-being of its pupils. To achieve this vision, a set of key design considerations were meticulously integrated into the project's framework which included opening up the washroom to improve visibility. This can help reduce vandalism whilst maintaining the pupil’s welfare, dignity and privacy.

Specifying Vinyl Safety Flooring was chosen for its exceptional slip resistance, durability and ease of maintenance. The flooring not only enhanced safety in high-traffic areas but also provided an attractive aesthetic appeal. The selection process included careful consideration of colour options, to choose those that complemented the Academy’s branding.

The walls have been cladded in PVC hygienic cladding, which is a proven, high performance alternative to ceramic tiles. It is impact-resistant, impermeable, grout-free and easy to maintain.

Floor-to-ceiling toilet cubicles were selected to maximise privacy for the students and create a comfortable user experience. The cubicles were chosen based on their compact grade construction and contemporary design, including stainless steel ironmongery. Attention was paid to ensuring the cubicles blended seamlessly with the overall design scheme.

Each specified wash trough or basin will be custom manufactured from Corian (type) solid surface which is customised to suit project requirements and offers a sleek, modern aesthetic that can complement various design styles. With the ability to integrate seamlessly into the countertop, they create a clean and streamlined look. The taps supplied are non-concussive (also known as self-closing taps and push-down taps) These taps deliver a timed flow of water once pressed down. Once the set time is reached, the valve closes, stopping the flow of water. This is ideal for schools which see high traffic or unsupervised washrooms as it can prevent flooding.

Ideal Standard sanitary ware was selected for its reputation as a leading provider of high-quality, functional and visually appealing bathroom fixtures. The range of BTW WC suites was fitted with 4.5-litre energy efficient water-saving concealed cisterns, showing the Academy’s commitment to saving the planet.
